Sapphire, a blue roan draft mare, was purchased at auction in August 2005. She was a little nervous and tentative of being handled when she first came, but now she even gives pony rides. She has really learned to trust and found that not ALL humans are bad. She was worked very hard and has a lot of unbalance to her. She must have driven in a team where she was always leaning. Her right shoulder has been atrophied due to injury or nerve damage probably from a poor fitting harness and collar. She is sound in the legs and comfortable. An unusual finding with her is when we brought her home she did not swish her tail at flies. Upon further examination we found she has a broken tail up high above the tail head. This does not cause her pain, but she is paralyzed in the tail and will not be able to keep the flies away like other horses. She will need to be kept inside during fly season and compensated with fly spray to help her out. This does not cause her any pain, the vet says the nerves have been damaged or severed and there is nothing anyone can do to fix her. She under goes weekly message therapy by Rebecca Murphy CMT and it has seemed to make her more comfortable all around. Sapphire has settled in well with the LCR family and is now being ridden and giving pony rides. She is only about 11 years as verified by our dentist. She will make a lovely trail horse or family pet and gets along with everyone. She even picks up her feet well.
